Once a year, the GFM Accountants team steps away from spreadsheets and client files to spend a day doing something different — giving back to the communities we work and live in.
GFM Volunteer Day is a firm-wide commitment. Every member of the team participates, and the day is chosen deliberately to sit outside of peak periods so that everyone can be fully present. It is not a token gesture or a photo opportunity. It is a genuine effort to contribute time and energy to causes that matter.
Over the years, the team has worked with local food relief organisations, environmental groups, and community support services. The specific cause changes from year to year, chosen through a team vote that reflects where people feel their effort will have the most impact. That process matters — it means the day is owned by the whole firm, not handed down from management.
Why it matters to us
Accounting firms spend a lot of time helping clients build financial security. That work is meaningful. But financial wellbeing does not exist in isolation — it sits inside communities, families, and social structures that need tending. Volunteer Day is our acknowledgement of that broader picture.
There is also something practically valuable about the day for the team itself. Working alongside colleagues in a completely different context — outdoors, physical, unstructured — builds a kind of trust and familiarity that office life rarely produces. People show up differently when the task is planting trees or packing food hampers rather than preparing a tax return.
What the day looks like
The team assembles early, usually at a central meeting point, before heading to the volunteer site together. Depending on the organisation we are supporting, the work might involve physical labour, logistics support, or direct community engagement. We bring our own equipment where needed, follow the lead of the host organisation, and stay for the full day.
Afterwards, the team typically gathers for a meal — a low-key way to close the day and reflect on what was accomplished. It has become one of the more anticipated events on the GFM calendar, which says something about the culture the firm has built over time.
A firm that looks outward
GFM Accountants was founded on the idea that good accounting is about more than compliance. It is about helping people make sound decisions, plan with confidence, and build something lasting. Volunteer Day is an extension of that philosophy — a reminder that the work we do is connected to something larger than any individual client engagement.
If you are a client, a prospective client, or simply someone who wants to understand what GFM stands for, this page is part of that answer. We are a firm that takes its responsibilities seriously — to clients, to staff, and to the wider community.
